Letter from the Board of Education President
New Rochelle Community Member,
At our community meeting on January 23, 2018, we announced that an independent Task Force would review all policies and practices regarding school safety and security, with the larger aim of reducing violence.
Today, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Jonathan Brice will serve as the Chair of the Task Force on Reducing Violence in the Lives of Children and Youth.
Dr. Brice has served as a teacher, school leader, and district administrator in six large public school districts, including the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, where he currently serves as the Associate Superintendent for Student and Family Support and Engagement. He has extensive experience in all aspects of school climate and culture including the successful implementation of various programs related to student safety. Dr. Brice also brings a national perspective, having served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education for the United States Department of Education where he provided leadership in programming in several areas, including bullying prevention. He also helped the Department launch its Family and Community Engagement Framework and strategy, and served as a team member for former President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative. Dr. Brice brings a depth and breadth of experience to the role Task Force Chair and we look forward to his leadership.
The Task Force will address ways to reduce violence in the lives of children and youth. The purpose of the Task Force is to bring together city government, social services, non-profit and faith-based organizations, law enforcement, community members, and the schools to work together to raise New Rochelle children and youth free of the fear of violence.
To successfully achieve its mission, we are inviting members of the community to apply to join the Task Force. The Task Force will include members of diverse perspectives – including parents, students, school representatives, city representatives, law enforcement, faith-based and non-profit organizations. To learn more about the Task Force, please visit the designated page on the district’s website. To apply to be a member, please click here and fill out the required fields.
